Villach is surprising
Villach is the Carinthian town that displays the greatest Mediterranean influence. This is not only true of the climate but also primarily of the architecture and people’s mentality. Hardly surprising when the town surrounded by lakes and mountains is only a few minutes’ drive from the Italian border. But it is also only a stone’s throw from Slovenia. Indeed, the town on the Drau is a perfect example of an Alpine-Adriatic centre.
In Austria, people tend to associate Villach first and foremost with its winter carnival and summer fair. Which actually does say quite a lot about the town on the River Drau and above all its inhabitants. However hard they may work here, they certainly know how to have a good time, too. This can be seen from the many carnival cabaret shows in January and February, and of course the Fair, which turns the town into one big stage with music and dancing on the first weekend in August. No fewer than 200,000 people create an amazing atmosphere every year. The Fair forms part of the Villach folklore week, the largest festival of its kind in Austria.
