The region’s longest lake at 11 kilometres is Lake Ossiach. Its warm, clean waters are ideal for swimming and various water sports and hardly surprisingly many of the attractive hotels on the shoreline cater specially for families. Lake Ossiach has also gained an international reputation as the venue for the Carinthian Summer, which along with Salzburg and Bregenz is one of Austria’s three major international music festivals. Founded in 1969, the festival has staged church operas in Ossiach’s Baroque abbey since 1974 that have earned worldwide recognition. Another regular feature on the programme since 1982 has been music for and with children, which fits in nicely with the region’s tourism philosophy.
