Österreich Kärnten Fischen Draufluss Villach

An attractive town surrounded by mountains, alpine meadows and the river, Paternion lies between Spittal and Villach.

Here in the lower Drau Valley visitors find the peace and quiet they seek. When out walking, cycling, riding or simply soaking up the scenery. The famous River Drau cycle path runs through the Paternion area. Just the right place to stop for a rest, have a snack in a local eatery or spend the night.

Not to be missed: Lansach-Feffernitz ferry across the Drau. The old tradition of ferrying passengers – and bikes – is revived from early May to late September. And enjoyed by visitors and locals alike. It is indeed an unusual experience to be rowed over the river by a real ferryman.

Paternion also attracts anglers, as fishing is permitted on the Drau here over a stretch of about 10 kilometres. What about swimming? No problem! The town’s modern outdoor pool is open in summer for you. And Carinthia’s larger lakes are only a stone’s throw away.

Modern art in the country? The Grünspan art society is highly active. In a former barn the society arranges excellent concerts, readings and exhibitions. Those interested in culture can also visit three castles and churches in and around Paternion.
