Well worth a visit: Wernberg convent perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking a bend in the Drau. The building run by the Sisters of the Precious Blood is actually in part a Renaissance castle dating back to the early 13th century. Today it houses a nunnery, education centre and guesthouse with its own farm and a well-stocked shop selling its produce. On offer: convent holidays, fasting, herb and painting courses, etc.

The attractions of water in Wernberg: bird watching at the bend in the River Drau or exploring Carinthia’s largest river by boat. A cruise boat also operates on the Drau from Föderlach upriver to Villach. You can go swimming at Wernberg’s lake with water covering an area of 8,000 square metres, a 45-metre-long slide etc.

For the active: signposted footpaths, running trails, riding schools and tennis courts. Particularly popular: the famous Drau cycle path that also runs through the town. Not to be missed: Schloss Damtschach, the ruins of Eichelburg and Hohenwart (black castle) and Sternberg.
